Travelling to a Village in Bangladesh (Unit-09, Lesson-01)

• • Bangladesh, despite a fast paced urbanization, still remains predominantly rural. How many villages are there now? Sixty four thousands or more? Have the villages changed much over the years? How did they respond to the onslaught of urbanization or growth in education?
    In the following extract, we will see a Bangladeshi village and the villagers through the eyes of an English professor from England who taught in Dhaka university twice-first between 1947 and 1951 and again in 1972.

  • We set out on the evening of July 21st. Food was scarce in the village so Abdul packed a suitcase with two loaves and some tea and tins of milk, cheese and jam. We traveled Intermediate class in a cross-country train not uncomfortably crowded, through a country of shadowy loveliness.
    It was a moonlit night of broken soft clouds; the land was mostly under water, with paddy and coco-palms growing from it, and a few raised cart-tracks and groups of cottages islanded among clumps of bushes, all reflected among shadows. Here and there was the red glow of a cooking-fire or the lantern of a fisherman’s boat in open water.

  • আমরা ২১ জুলাই সন্ধ্যায় রওয়ানা করলাম। গ্রামে খাবারের বেশ সংকট ছিল তাই আব্দুল দুটো পাউরুটি, চা, দুধের কৌটা, পনীর ও আচার সুটকেসে নিয়েছিল। আমরা গ্রামমুখী একটি রেলগাড়ির দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণিতে ভ্রমণ করছিলাম। গাড়িতে অসহনীয় ভীড় ছিল না। আমরা ছায়াময়ী সৌন্দর্যমণ্ডিত গ্রামের মধ্য দিয়ে চলছিলাম।
    এটি ছিল হালকা মেঘপুঞ্জে ঢাকা জ্যোৎস্নারাত। অধিকাংশ এলাকাই প্লাবিত ছিল। যেখানে ছিল উৎপন্ন ধান ও নারকেল গাছ, এবড়ো থেবড়ো উঁচু পথ ও ঝোপ-ঝাড়ে ঘেরা দ্বীপের মতো কয়েকটি কুটির। যার সবই (জ্যোৎস্নার) ছায়ায় প্রতিফলিত হচ্ছিল। সর্বত্র রান্নার আগুন ও উন্মুক্ত জলাশয়ে (পুকুর-নদী-বিল) মাছ ধরার নৌকার হারিকেনের লাল আভা দেখা যাচ্ছিল।

  • At dawn, we reached Sonaimuri, a small canal-side station among wide fields, from there we had eight more miles by country boat, some of it along the canal, some of it across the flooded paddy fields. I was looking forward to that tranquil water-journey in the early morning, and tranquil it must have been, for I fell instantly asleep and knew no more till we reached the landing-ghat at Khorshed’s house, in a blaze of sunlight.
    It turned out that his letter saying that he was bringing me was still on its way, but they rallied to the crisis and gathered round to make me welcome, though as none of them spoke any English they could only stare and laugh and offer me coco-nut juice.

  • ভোরে আমরা সোনাইমুড়ি পৌঁছলাম। বিশাল মাঠের মাঝে একটি ছোট খালের পাশে স্টেশনটি অবস্থিত। সেখান থেকে ডিঙি নৌকায় আমাদের আরও আট মাইল যেতে হয়েছিল। পথের কিছু অংশ ছিল খালের মধ্য দিয়ে আর কিছু অংশ প্লাবিত ধানক্ষেতের মধ্য দিয়ে। আমি সকালবেলা এমন একটি আরামদায়ক নৌভ্রমণ চেয়েছিলাম আর এটা এতটাই আরামদায়ক ছিল যে আমি তৎক্ষণাত ঘুমিয়ে পড়ি এবং খোরশেদের বাড়ির ঘাটে পৌঁছানো পর্যন্ত আমার ঘুমই ভাঙে নি। তখন সূর্যের প্রখর রৌদ্র ছিল।
    জানা গেল, (খোরশেদের) সেই চিঠি- যেখানে আমাকে আনার সংবাদ ছিল- তা এখনো (গ্রামবাসীর নিকট) পৌঁছায় নি। তবে (গ্রামবাসী অচেনা মেহমান নিয়ে) সংকটে পড়েও সব সামলে নিয়েছিল এবং আমাকে অভ্যর্থনা জানাতে সমবেত হয়েছিল। যদিও তারা কেউ ইংরেজি বলত না তারা কেবল মুগ্ধ দৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে হাসতে থাকে। তারা আমাকে ডাবের পানি পান করতে দেয়।

  • Khorshed set me up a camp, a wooden bed, chair and table in a thatched bamboo outhouse. It was a lovely spot among bamboo and coco-palms, facing a tank where fireflies wove intricate dances at night.
    He put his own bed beside it for protection, and there I stayed, holding permanent court from dawn to bedtime. Within village memory and that went back for some two centuries, I was the first European to go there: It was too remote even for a District Commissioner to pass through.
  • খোরশেদ আমার জন্য কাছারিতে একটি কাঠের বিছানা, চেয়ার ও টেবিলসহ আবাস তৈরি করে দিল। এটি ছিল বাঁশঝাড় ও নারকেল গাছে ঘেরা এক অসাধারণ স্থান যার সামনে ছিল পুকুর। রাতের বেলা জোনাকিরা সেখানে মনোরম নৃত্যের জাল বোনে। খোরশেদ (আমার) নিরাপত্তার জন্য এর পাশেই তার বিছানা পেতেছিল। সেখানে (কাছারি) আমি সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত স্থায়ী মজলিস নিয়ে থাকতাম। এই গ্রামের দুই শতকের ইতিহাসে একজন ইউরোপীয় হিসেবে আমিই প্রথম ছিলাম। গ্রামটি এতটাই প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলে ছিল যে, জেলা প্রশাসক কখনো আসেন নি।
  • Also since I was a woman, the women could come (at different times from the men) to look at me without losing their characters. People kept coming and coming: only the rains and the fact that few of them were rich enough to have boats prevented them from coming from ten miles round.
    When he saw that they would not stop coming Khorshed fixed some curtains round the bed so that I could crawl behind them when I was tired of being looked at, like a zoo animal into its sleeping hut.

 

• যেহেতু আমি একজন নারী তাই নারীরা তাদের স্বভাব (গ্রামের সংস্কৃতি) অনুসরণ করে আমাকে দেখতে আসত (পুরুষদের জন্য ভিন্ন সময় ছিল)। ক্রমাগত লোকজন আসতেই থাকল। বৃষ্টির বাধা না থাকলে ১০ মাইল দূর থেকে ধনীরা নিজস্ব নৌকা করে আসতে থাকল।

খোরশেদ যখন দেখল লোকজনের আসা বন্ধ হচ্ছে না, তখন সে আমার বিছানার চারপাশে একটি পর্দা তুলে দিল যাতে আমি তাদের সাথে সাক্ষাত করে ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়লে যেন আমি হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে পেছনে চলে যেতে পারি। যেভাবে চিড়িয়াখানায় প্রাণীরা ঘুমাবার স্থানে যায়।

 

• Even then the little hut would fill up with women and children. Children followed when I went out, and when Khorshed remonstrated a small boy pleaded, “Don’t send us away! After she’s gone not even a strange bird will come to the village.”
  I stood up to the celebrity for the two days we had planned, but it was enough.
• তখনো (আমার বিশ্রামের সময়) ঐ ছোট ঘরটি নারী-শিশু দ্বারা পরিপূর্ণ থাকত। আমি যখন বাইরে যেতাম, তখন ছেলেমেয়েরা দল বেঁধে আমায় অনুসরণ করত। (এগুলো দেখে) খোরশেদ তাদের ধমক দিলে একটি ছোট্ট ছেলে অনুরোধ করে বলল, “আমাদের তাড়িয়ে দিবেন না। উনি চলে গেলে একটা অচেনা পাখিও এই গ্রামে আসবে না। আমরা যে দুদিনের পরিকল্পনা করেছিলাম সে দিনগুলোতে বিশেষ ব্যক্তি হয়ে উঠলাম। তবে তা (আতিথেয়তা ও প্রদর্শনের বাড়াবাড়ি) যথেষ্ট ছিল।
